São Miguel is a complete island, not a summary of the archipelago
This guide is explicitly limited to São Miguel. Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas and Nordeste make a coherent journey on one island; visiting another island requires separate planning.
Weather determines the order. Cloud can close the interior while the coast remains visible, and wind or rain can make a trail unsuitable. Check IPMA and official trail status before leaving.
Three decisions for Atlantic weather
These are not consecutive days: choose the alternative that matches visibility and trail conditions.
Clear interior
- Prioritise Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo and one official trail.
- Cloud can arrive quickly and access may be regulated.
Confirm visibility and trail status before climbing.
Low cloud over the calderas
- Move the route to Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande or the west coast.
- Swell and wind can also limit the coast.
Change elevation rather than waiting on a roadside for the caldera to clear.
Persistent rain or wind
- Reduce driving and combine urban heritage with a booked thermal visit.
- Thermal facilities and visitor gardens have their own opening hours, capacity limits and rules.
Verify each facility and keep enough margin to cancel.
What to check before choosing coast or interior
- Use IPMA forecasts by locality and elevation rather than one screenshot for the whole island.
- Check Trails Azores for current trail status and respect closures and signs.
- Carry waterproof layers and grippy footwear; turn back when fog removes route references.
- Confirm thermal-bath bookings and rules, and remain behind fumarole barriers.

West · Sete Cidades and Mosteiros
The western caldera holds lakes, green ridges and the inhabited basin of Sete Cidades, with an Atlantic continuation towards Mosteiros. Understand it through one viewpoint, one walk and the village rather than collecting every roadside balcony. Drive west from Ponta Delgada, choosing Vista do Rei or an official trail only after checking visibility and status. Park legally, descend to the village, and add Mosteiros only with daylight and enough return margin.

Centre · Lagoa do Fogo, Ribeira Grande and Furnas
A high protected lake occupies the central caldera above exposed slopes. Ribeira Grande adds streets, market and north-coast life below, while Caldeira Velha or Salto do Cabrito can supply one controlled forest experience. Check seasonal access rules and PR02SMI status. Fog, wind or mud can cancel a walk while the shore remains sunny; use regulated transport whenever authorities require it. Furnas makes underground heat visible through fumaroles, springs, lake and gardens. Thermal water is not an unlimited prop: pools have temperatures, capacity and rules, while cozido requires hours below ground and a kitchen that plans its service. Give Furnas a complete day. Book bathing where required, use dark swimwear around iron-rich water and remain behind fumarole barriers. Walk beside the lake only on open routes.

East · Povoação and Nordeste
The eastern road unfolds through planted viewpoints, cliffs, pasture and villages. Nordeste and Povoação reveal island life beyond the capital; Faial da Terra has trails, but adding one requires dropping other distant stops. Reserve a full day and return before late night if sleeping west. Select one official trail, such as Sanguinho when open, and never treat Furnas, a waterfall and Nordeste as adjacent attractions.
Volcanic ground, island cultivation and Atlantic catch
Cozido, pineapple, tea, cheese and fish make more sense through origin and availability than as a compulsory list.
Cozido das Furnas, heat below ground
Meat, sausages and vegetables cook slowly in vessels placed in geothermal ground beside the lake. This is not an improvised lunch: reserve with a kitchen that schedules the process, ask what is included and share sensible portions. Technique, time and caldera are inseparable.
São Miguel pineapple and northern tea
Pineapple grows in greenhouses near Ponta Delgada, while tea forms a distinctive agricultural landscape on the north coast. Visit producers that explain the cycle, taste without assuming it is free, and stay on admitted routes rather than cutting through working fields.
Cheese, limpets and Atlantic fish
Azorean cheeses vary by island and maturation, so verify origin rather than calling every wedge São Jorge. Limpets, tuna and fresh fish depend on sea and season. Ask preparation and price before ordering, and accept that responsible availability changes.
