This Atlantic week deliberately stays on São Miguel. It does not pretend that breakfast on one island and a walk on another require no airport, harbour or weather margin: one island is enough to connect Sete Cidades, geothermal Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo, Nordeste and daily life in Ponta Delgada.
Weather changes between coasts and elevations. Check official trail alerts and visibility before climbing, drive with spare time, and keep a lower-level alternative. Thermal bathing follows each facility’s booking, shower and safety rules; muddy paths require grip, water and the willingness to turn back when cloud removes the route.

Sete Cidades and Mosteiros
The western caldera holds lakes, green ridges and the inhabited basin of Sete Cidades, with an Atlantic continuation towards Mosteiros. Understand it through one viewpoint, one walk and the village rather than collecting every roadside balcony.
Before you go Drive west from Ponta Delgada, choosing Vista do Rei or an official trail only after checking visibility and status. Park legally, descend to the village, and add Mosteiros only with daylight and enough return margin.
Best for Volcanic landscape, moderate walking and a coastal sunset without changing islands.

Furnas thermal valley
Furnas makes underground heat visible through fumaroles, springs, lake and gardens. Thermal water is not an unlimited prop: pools have temperatures, capacity and rules, while cozido requires hours below ground and a kitchen that plans its service.
Before you go Give Furnas a complete day. Book bathing where required, use dark swimwear around iron-rich water and remain behind fumarole barriers. Walk beside the lake only on open routes.
Best for Geology, botany, respectful bathing and a meal whose technique belongs to the valley.

Lagoa do Fogo and Ribeira Grande
A high protected lake occupies the central caldera above exposed slopes. Ribeira Grande adds streets, market and north-coast life below, while Caldeira Velha or Salto do Cabrito can supply one controlled forest experience.
Before you go Check seasonal access rules and PR02SMI status. Fog, wind or mud can cancel a walk while the shore remains sunny; use regulated transport whenever authorities require it.
Best for Hiking, wet forest, northern town life and plans that adapt rather than force the mountain.

Nordeste, Povoação and the east
The eastern road unfolds through planted viewpoints, cliffs, pasture and villages. Nordeste and Povoação reveal island life beyond the capital; Faial da Terra has trails, but adding one requires dropping other distant stops.
Before you go Reserve a full day and return before late night if sleeping west. Select one official trail, such as Sanguinho when open, and never treat Furnas, a waterfall and Nordeste as adjacent attractions.
Best for Coast, villages, public gardens and travellers prepared to drive slowly with generous margins.

Four workable bases
One base brings flexibility; two can reduce the long road between west and east.
Ponta Delgada
Practical base Flexible urban base
Airport, rental desks, buses, market, marina and dining make the capital practical. It avoids hotel changes, although Furnas and Nordeste still demand early starts and road time.
Choose it if You want one room, dinners on foot and freedom to swap days around cloud.
Ginetes and the west
Practical base Near Sete Cidades and Ferraria
Sleeping west shortens the caldera, Mosteiros and Ponta da Ferraria. Services on foot are fewer and night roads need attention; coastal thermal access always depends on sea state.
Choose it if Western landscape and quiet matter more than an urban evening, and you have transport.
Furnas
Practical base Thermal immersion in the east
One or two nights let you bathe and walk without crossing the island that day. Humidity and mineral smells belong to the valley; Nordeste is closer, while Sete Cidades becomes a long transfer.
Choose it if Thermal landscapes justify moving base and you keep east and west on separate days.
Ribeira Grande
Practical base Bridge across north and centre
The northern town supports Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha, tea country and beaches. It connects reasonably with Ponta Delgada but cannot remove the drive to either end.
Choose it if North-coast life and central trails appeal more than the capital, without choosing a rural base.

Cozido das Furnas, heat below ground
Meat, sausages and vegetables cook slowly in vessels placed in geothermal ground beside the lake. This is not an improvised lunch: reserve with a kitchen that schedules the process, ask what is included and share sensible portions. Technique, time and caldera are inseparable.

São Miguel pineapple and northern tea
Pineapple grows in greenhouses near Ponta Delgada, while tea forms a distinctive agricultural landscape on the north coast. Visit producers that explain the cycle, taste without assuming it is free, and stay on admitted routes rather than cutting through working fields.

Cheese, limpets and Atlantic fish
Azorean cheeses vary by island and maturation, so verify origin rather than calling every wedge São Jorge. Limpets, tuna and fresh fish depend on sea and season. Ask preparation and price before ordering, and accept that responsible availability changes.

Five genuinely connected days
Everything happens on São Miguel; another island needs an airport or harbour day of its own.
- Day 1
Arrive on São Miguel and settle in Ponta Delgada. Walk the market, historic gates and marina, collecting a car only if needed. Check trail alerts, thermal reservations and zone-by-zone weather; do not turn a flight afternoon into a cross-island excursion.
- Day 2
West: use visibility to choose one Sete Cidades viewpoint and an official walking section, then descend to the village. Continue to Mosteiros or Ginetes in daylight. Include Ferraria only when access, sea state and timing are safe.
- Day 3
Centre and north: check Lagoa do Fogo regulation. If access or trail conditions are poor, favour Ribeira Grande and the coast. Pair the lake with only one authorised forest or thermal experience rather than racing to Nordeste.
- Day 4
Furnas: follow an open lakeside route, observe fumaroles from behind barriers and eat pre-booked cozido. Give the afternoon to one garden and one rule-governed thermal bath. Sleep here or return west with generous time.
- Day 5
East: from Furnas or Ponta Delgada follow Povoação to Nordeste, selecting viewpoints and at most one open official trail. Count bends, stops and the return, not kilometres alone. Leave any inter-island flight or ferry for a separate full day.
Geographic honesty also means saving something for the next island.
